News - DU girl suspended for 'theft', row over announcing name
NEW DELHI: A public notice by DU's Dayal Singh college about suspension of a girl student for allegedly stealing a mobile phone has triggered a row with a few teachers and the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) objecting to making public of the circular and the girl's name.
The college principal, however, is maintaining that the girl has confessed to stealing the phone after a disciplinary committee found her guilty, and hence there should be no objection to making the notice public.
The notice, which has been posted on the college's notice board as well as on the website, says, "The student has been suspended from college for her involvement in case of theft of a mobile phone on recommendation of discipline committee of the college."
The girl has also been asked to give an explanation about why she should not be rusticated from the college.
"If the college has found a student guilty of some act, he or she should be communicated in person about the action or proceedings. This name and shame campaign can have an impact on the girl's future not only professionally but also as an individual," a college teacher said.
DCW chief Swati Maliwal has also termed the act to be "unbecoming of the college".
"As per my information, the inquiry has not been completed yet. If any student has been issued a show-cause notice to explain her position, what is the need to publicize it. It is unbecoming of the college to do so, " Maliwal told PTI.
"Even if the girl is guilty, she should not be subjected to such public harassment for theft of a cell phone. The college can punish her but announcing it on its website is unethical," she added.
However, college principal IS Bakshi defended the notice saying,"The girl was given a chance to explain her position before the disciplinary committee. It is not just an allegation, she has confessed it too."
"There should be no objection to making public of the student's name as other students will refrain from indulging in such activities in fear of action," he added.

They announced their engagement in the births, marriages and deaths section of the Times newspaper, which is owned by Mr Murdoch's News Corporation company.
It will be the fourth marriage for Mr Murdoch, 84, and the first for Miss Hall, 59, although she lived with singer Sir Mick Jagger for many years.
The new relationship reportedly began in the summer. A spokesman said: "They have loved these past months together."
They were "thrilled to be getting married and excited about their future", he added.
Australian-born Mr Murdoch, who now has US nationality, split up with his third wife Wendi Deng in 2013.
American Miss Hall's 23-year relationship with Rolling Stones frontman Jagger, with whom she had four children, ended in 1999.
Mr Murdoch and Miss Hall were first spotted together in public in October at the Rugby World Cup final in London between Australia and New Zealand.
Actress Joan Collins tweeted a picture of herself and Miss Hall, saying: "The future "Mrs. M" glowing about being #engaged to her new beau! #fiance #Congratulations".
The couple were introduced to each other in Australia by one of Mr Murdoch's sisters and his niece, The Times reports.
It says the couple got engaged while in Los Angeles at the weekend, where they attended the Golden Globe awards ceremony.

Actor Kiku Sharda arrested for offending Dera chief Ram Rahim Singh
Looks like trouble doesn't seem to end for Palak aka Kiku Sharda of 'Comedy Nights With Kapil'. The actor was in news recently for hurting religious sentiments after he mimicked Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
The latest update on the news is that the comedian had been sent to 14-day judicial custody.
Kaithal's chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Manjit Kaur on January 13 remanded him to judicial custody. While being produced in the court, Kiku Sharda had pleaded innocence by saying that he had acted in accordance to the sequence of programme that too according to script.
He has also tendered an unconditional apology in case he has hurt anybody's sentiments, said Kaithal SP Krishan Murari.
Incidents dates back to December 27th when Kaithal police had booked Kiku Sharda in a case registered against him at Kaithal's city police station. Case was registered following the complaint of team of Dera Followers who had accused him portraying Dera Sacha Sauda head in bad light despite the fact that Dera as well dera head has undertaken over 114 social works.
Dera followers have alleged that Kiku had performed an act on the lines of Dera Head's role in film MSG. Kiku is shown dancing with girls and flaunting liquor bottles.
Notably, Dera management has also started taking the cognizance of jokes and any objectionable material defaming the Dera head as well Dera followers.
This is on ever since Dera head as well as management has involved in production of films.

Looks like trouble doesn't seem to end for Palak aka Kiku Sharda of 'Comedy Nights With Kapil'. The actor was in news recently for hurting religious sentiments after he mimicked Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
The latest update on the news is that the comedian had been sent to 14-day judicial custody.
Kaithal's chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Manjit Kaur on January 13 remanded him to judicial custody. While being produced in the court, Kiku Sharda had pleaded innocence by saying that he had acted in accordance to the sequence of programme that too according to script.
He has also tendered an unconditional apology in case he has hurt anybody's sentiments, said Kaithal SP Krishan Murari.
Incidents dates back to December 27th when Kaithal police had booked Kiku Sharda in a case registered against him at Kaithal's city police station. Case was registered following the complaint of team of Dera Followers who had accused him portraying Dera Sacha Sauda head in bad light despite the fact that Dera as well dera head has undertaken over 114 social works.
Dera followers have alleged that Kiku had performed an act on the lines of Dera Head's role in film MSG. Kiku is shown dancing with girls and flaunting liquor bottles.
Notably, Dera management has also started taking the cognizance of jokes and any objectionable material defaming the Dera head as well Dera followers.
This is on ever since Dera head as well as management has involved in production of films.

Shah Rukh Khan made a late entry at Dabboo Ratnani's calendar launch. The actor was busy shooting for Raees and was apologetic that he wasn't looking as dapper as he normally did.
"Sorry yaar, I wanted to wear a suit and stuff but I'm shooting the whole night so dressed comfortably," the actor told NDTV on the sidelines of the event.
Not that we complained. We loved the dishevelled look on King Khan.
But while he may have been wearing fatigues, fatigue was also clearly setting in for King Khan who still had a night of work ahead for him.
So how was the new year treating him?
With an exhausted sigh, SRK responded, "Work, work and more work. Every year just slides into the other with more work."
Asked about the possibility of a May-December romance between him and Alia Bhatt on screen, SRK, in his trademark witty style, said, "But I'm much younger than Alia. It's a December-May romance."
With that, he stepped out into the night to work into the wee hours of Wednesday. And we guess that's why King Khan is never dated!
